The DeHart Family Asphalt Legacy: A Story of Growth, Hard Work, and Family Values

1977

1977 - The Beginning in Michigan:

In 1977, Leonard DeHart Sr., and his son, Leonard Jr., began their journey in the asphalt industry while living in Michigan. Recognizing the opportunity for growth and the need for a new start, the group made a bold decision to leave Michigan and relocate to Arizona to build something new from the ground up. It was there, in the warm deserts of Arizona, that Leonard Sr founded Western Asphalt, and Leonard Jr met and married Patricia. Together, they worked diligently, serving clients in the valley during the mild Arizona winters and venturing to Moab for the summers. This dual approach between seasons was just the beginning of what would become a lifelong commitment to the industry.
1980 - 83

1980-1983 – Laying the Foundation:

From 1980 to 1983, the family laid the foundation of what would eventually grow into a renowned name in the asphalt industry. Their hard work, dedication, and ability to adapt to the demands of different markets in Arizona began to pay off, although it was clear their journey was just beginning.
1992

1992 – A New Chapter with DeHart Asphalt:

In 1992, Leonard Jr. and his wife Patricia made another life-changing decision. Along with their young children, Angela (11), Amanda (9), and Lenny (6), the DeHart family decided it was time to establish their own brand. They founded DeHart Asphalt and began their journey in the asphalt industry with a vision of building something that would last for generations. They embraced the challenge of being a family-owned business, where each member would play a pivotal role in the success of the company.
1993

1993 – Loss and Growth:

In 1993, tragedy struck when Leonard DeHart Sr. passed away, marking a moment of reflection and perseverance for the family. During this time of mourning, they pushed forward, purchasing their first sealcoat tank—a crucial step in expanding the scope of their work. This symbolized their commitment to carrying on Leonard Sr.'s legacy and continuing to build the company with strength and determination.
1995 - 2001

1995-2001 – Building a Reputation in Arizona:

In 1995, after establishing DeHart Asphalt in Florida, the DeHart family decided to make another move—back to Arizona. They packed up everything, including their growing business, and returned to the state where it all began. From 1995 to 2001, the family worked tirelessly, building a reputation based on integrity, excellence, and dedication to their craft. Their efforts were rewarded when DeHart Asphalt was named Sealcoat and Sweeper Contractor of the Year (2001) by Pavement Magazine in recognition of their hard work and high standards.
2004 - 07

2004-2007 - A Family Addition:

Amanda and Robert met, and in 2005, they married, with Robert joining Amanda’s family. Over the next few years, from 2005 to 2007, Robert became deeply involved in the family business, starting his career in asphalt maintenance and working to learn and contribute to its growth
2014

2014 – A Growing Family Effort:

In 2014, Robert and Amanda took their involvement in the business to the next level. They began striping on weekends, helping out DeHart Asphalt whenever needed. This new venture allowed them to further expand their knowledge and expertise, all while keeping the family business running smoothly during the busy season.
2023 - 24

2023-2024 – A New Era:

As the years passed, Amanda and Robert found themselves not only returning to the striping business, but also transitioning into leadership roles alongside Leonard and Patricia. With their vast experience in the asphalt industry and the legacy built by Leonard Sr., Jr., and Patricia, they worked side by side, preparing for the future of DeHart Asphalt.
2025

2025 – Celebrating 30 Years in Arizona and a New Chapter:

In 2025, DeHart Asphalt, celebrates a significant milestone: 30 years in the Arizona asphalt industry. This marks not only three decades of hard work, but also Robert and Amanda’s 20th wedding anniversary. With the torch being passed from Leonard and Patricia to the next generation, DeHart Asphalt enters a new chapter with Amanda and Robert taking on the mantle as the new leaders of the company. Their vision for the future is clear: to continue growing the family legacy while maintaining the values that made DeHart Asphalt a trusted name in the industry. As DeHart Asphalt looks toward the future, the DeHart family stands strong—united in purpose, driven by passion, and dedicated to the craft. Their story is one of perseverance, growth, and the unwavering belief that family, hard work, and commitment are the keys to success.
